Water Plants:

Day-Blooming Tropical Waterlilies

These lilies open midmorning and close late afternoon. Tropical waterlilies come in about every color, and some are even mixed. They are also noted for their fragrances. In Hawaii, tropical lilies will bloom all year long with proper care and nutrients.

Night-Blooming Tropical Waterlilies

Night-bloomers usually open around dusk and stay open until late morning. Although limited in colors, night-bloomers are perfect for those who work all day and miss the day-blooming tropicals. They will be there to greet you early in the morning and late in the afternoon after work.

Hardy Waterlilies

Hardy waterlilies come in shades of white, yellow, red, pink and even changeables. These plants are stunning in leaf and flower. And, although they go dormant in the Hawaiian winter, one experience with this flower will keep you longing for spring and their arrival. You'll regret passing these up!

Lotus

This plant is unmistakable due to its huge round leaves and flowers that stick high out of the water. Lotus open in early morning and close early afternoon. Colors include white, red, pink, yellow and bicolor. The lotus is revered in Asian cultures and most commonly associated with Buddhists. It is said that Buddha himself, rose out of the flower of a lotus. Plant this for a little extra harmony.

Marginals and Bog Plants

These plants are essential for any water garden for biological and functional reasons. Marginals help filtration, add shade and help oxygenate. Marginals also add dimension, soften landscape and hide unsightly liners and pond equipment. But mostly, they are just nice to have around!
